Building Ensenya

Meet the founder

Hi, I'm Ethan.

I'm 20, I'm based in Portsmouth, and I build language apps. I'm also learning Spanish right alongside you.

The story so far

From one walk to one app

    How it started

The company I worked for went bust. I went for a walk, prayed, and asked what to build next. Nothing came, and it felt hopeless. Then one idea landed all at once: a test that tells you how good your Spanish really is.

    LenguaLens, my first app

It took me months to build, and I released it on my own. Hundreds of people used it, I made my first sales, and I got a lot of honest feedback. It didn't make me rich. It showed me there was something worth building.

    Why Ensenya exists

Most language apps felt slow to me, like I was ticking boxes instead of learning. At GCSE we learned from textbooks. They're boring, but they work, because they teach you the rules step by step.

Ensenya keeps that structure, pairs it with the words people actually use every day, and uses proven memory methods to make them stick.

Where my Spanish is

B1, and still learning

I can hold real conversations, but I know the gaps well, especially noun genders when I'm talking quickly.

  1. A1
  2. A2
  3. B1
  4. B2
  5. C1
  6. C2

Ensenya teaches every gender

el problema

Masculine, even though it ends in -a. Every noun comes with audio for the word and its article, until el problema sounds normal.

Why a pet?

Something to connect with

The best apps give you something to connect with. Your pet grows as you practise.

It's hand-built and animated from scratch, which is slow work when you're not an artist, but I'd rather ship quality every time.

Why I care

I'd rather have a small group of people who love Ensenya than millions who give up.

Ethan, founder

I call myself a professional language learner. I've tried the techniques, the apps and the science of memory.

If I can improve one person's Spanish, that's a success to me. I see this work as something I do for Christ, and I want to put some good into the world, one small step at a time.
